Description

A beautifully designed town house on the corner of the main square ? in the heart of Tokaj The Tokaj Museum has been open to visitors since May 1985. Built around 1790 by the Greek-born Karácsony family, then owned by the Szaszaráth family in the 19th century, this former merchant family residence is a single-story building richly decorated both inside and out. Not only the building, but also the quality of the exhibitions, the friendliness of the staff, and the atmosphere of the inner courtyard, which functions as a "show garden," captivate visitors! The luxury of merchant life is evident to the untrained eye, both inside and out! Some of the interior spaces of the building are decorated with priceless murals. For example, the panoramic painting in one of the ground floor rooms creates the impression that the viewer is walking along the banks of the Tisza River two hundred years ago. The exhibitions have also been "grown up" to match the beauty of the museum building: the institution has undergone a thorough renovation. We transferred all the material presenting viticulture in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region to our World Heritage Wine Museum, which opened at the end of 2015, thus expanding the 21st-century interactive exhibition accessible to everyone. The reopened Tokaj Museum, which reopened on March 15, 2016, has a rejuvenated permanent exhibition that provides a detailed overview of the millennial history of the town of Tokaj and the Hegyalja region, based on the themes of archaeology, ethnography, and local history, and offers even more than that.
