The basilica of Esztergom is the largest church building in Hungary. On the spot of the current church the old church stood in which the saint Stefanus I in 1000 was crowned to king and this way Hungary became a state in Europe. This old church has been devastated. Of this church still kept remained the with red marble covered Bakócz-kapel. The current church has been built between 1821 and 1856 with the Sint Peter in Rome as an example. The classicistic basilica is 118 meters long and 72 meters high. In the church the largest and most precious treasure chamber of Europe lies according to the Hungarians. The exhibition has royal and ecclesiastical golds and silverwares of the 9th century until now: Gothic Suky-goblet and the golden monstrance of king Mátyás Corvinus Hunyady. The dome can be climbed as well as the tower.
