St Stephen's Basilica
Budapest • Sights
The basilica is the largest church of Budapest (the Second in Hungary after Esztergom). Construction started in 1851.The cupola collapsed however in 1868, so that they could start again. Completion was in 1905.
It has 8500 seats. The church has been dedicated to the saint king Stephen whose right hand is kept as a relic in the basilica. The cupola of 96 meters catches the eye high (just as high as well as the parliament). This cupola is larger than what ever bell-tower in the city. In the right tower the largest bell of Hungary hangs, more than 9 tons.
On top of the cupola one can enjoy a beautiful view concerning Pest. This one can be reaches by an elevator or by means of the staircase (364 steps). This is a beautiful experience for children.
