The Republic of Hungary lies in the middle of Europe. The country is completely surrounded by land (it is not adjacent to any sea). It lies in the so-called Carpathian basin. In 1989 the name was changed from People's Republic of Hungary to Republic of Hungary (Magyar Köztársaság or Magyarorszag) in commemorating the revolution against the communist dictatorship. Since 2004 Hungary is a part of the EU.
